IRC? Nov. 7th, 2009 @ 04:55 pm
pookatimes
Bit of a long shot, but does anyone know if there are any University of London IRC (internet relay Chat) rooms lurking around? I know the University of Kent has loads, but none of the colleges of the UoL seem to even host an IRC server.

Would be interesting to see if there was one.

By the way, I'm currently at King's and I'm also SOAS alumni. :p

SOAS vs. LSE? Aug. 26th, 2008 @ 06:15 am

Hello all,

I'm starting the application processes for grad school (ahh!), and two of the programmes I've been considering are the MA Gender Studies at SOAS, and the MSc Gender, Development and Globalisation at LSE. I'm primarily interesting in addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender based violence in sub-Saharan Africa, from a development perspective. Both programs seem to suit me for different reasons -- SOAS because of the African focus, obviously, and LSE because of the emphasis on development. Does anyone have experience/opinions on these programs or the schools in general?

(I'm also thinking about the University of Sussex's Gender and Development programme, not in London though!)

I'm also not 100% clear on the difference between an MA and MSc (I'm Canadian and things are a little different back home). Are they basically the same thing, or is there a difference in teaching method, or what?

Thanks!

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Dear all,
as you might know, ULU has never been the most healthy financially. So, what a bunch of us alumni are working in is forming an association that will primarily build up a fund from which we can generate a contribution to specific items - e.g. new kit for the teams, or new equipment to the societies, or more efficient cookers, etc.

We're particularly interested in people who've benefited form membership of ULU, or gained skill that led to employment post-university, sort of along the lines of putting a small bit back.

The core of the effort is being built on Facebook here -

Please e-mail your MP and ask them vote against trident renewal on wednesday. We signed the nuclear nonproliferation treaty - we should honor it. We don't want other nations to develop nuclear capabilities, so we should disarm ourselves. Please fight!

Intro post/Public lecture series Feb. 1st, 2007 @ 08:08 pm

Hey everyone! I've been lurking for a while on this community and thought I'd post now I had something resembling content!

I'm Eni, I'm a first year PhD student at Queen Mary, working on Behavioural and Sensory Ecology and intend to be a mad academic until the day I retire! I'm slightly overobsessed with bees (and wasps), which is probably a good thing as it's what I work on!

So...in case anyone's interested, the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary is running a series of public lectures on Wednesday evenings throughout February. These form the Lesley Goodman lecture series in conjunction with the Royal Entomological Society and are targeted at a general, non-academic audience. The overall theme is the world through the eyes of insects.

Full details here on the QMUL website.

Lectures at 6pm each Wednesday, in the Skeel Lecture Theatre at QMUL. There's plenty of space so it's not really necessary to reserve a place.
